You will see “ISO/IEC 17025 accredited” on laboratory websites and certificates of analysis, often reduced to a logo. Treated as a badge, it is nearly meaningless. Understood properly, it is one of the most useful signals of whether you can trust a result, because accreditation is not a stamp a lab buys, but a defined competence a lab must prove and keep proving. More than a logo
ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. A lab does not “get certified” to it once and move on; it is accredited by an independent accreditation body that audits the lab’s methods, equipment, personnel, and quality system, and re-audits on an ongoing basis.
Scope: the part everyone misses
The single most important thing to understand is that accreditation is scoped. A lab is accredited to perform specific tests on specific matrices, not “everything it does.” A lab might be accredited for heavy metals in dietary supplements but not for the same test in cosmetics.
A result is only covered by accreditation if that specific test, on that specific matrix, falls within the lab’s accredited scope. The logo on the letterhead does not extend to work outside the scope document.

What accreditation requires
To earn and hold accreditation, a lab must demonstrate, among other things:
- Method validation: evidence that each method does what it claims (accuracy, precision, specificity, detection limits).
- Measurement uncertainty: a quantified estimate of how much a result could vary, so a number is reported with its confidence.
- Proficiency testing: periodic blind samples run against other labs to prove ongoing accuracy.
- Traceability and calibration: instruments calibrated against traceable references.
- Personnel competence and a documented quality management system.
Accredited vs. compliant vs. certified
These terms are often used loosely, but they are not the same. Accredited means an independent body has verified the lab’s competence for specific tests. Compliant means work follows a standard’s requirements, without necessarily being independently verified. Certified usually refers to a management-system certification (such as ISO 9001), which is about process, not technical testing competence. For test data, accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is the meaningful one.
How to verify a lab’s accreditation
Accreditation is public and checkable. A lab should be able to name its accreditation body and provide its certificate and scope document. You can confirm the certificate number with the accreditation body and read the scope to see whether the exact test you care about is listed. If a lab shows a logo but cannot produce a current scope covering your test, treat the claim with caution.
